This thesis presents studies on the prevention of childhood overweight. In this general introduction public health issues of childhood overweight will be addressed and a model of planned health education and health promotion will be introduced. Following the different steps of this model, the research questions that are addressed in this thesis are described. The chapter finishes with a summary of the research questions, an overview of the study designs and study populations that were utilized for adressing the research questions, and an outline of the thesis.
