Lung Cancer Screening Overdiagnosis. Reports of Overdiagnosis in Screening for Lung Cancer Are Grossly Exaggerated
2015, Academic RadiologyCitation Excerpt :The trial was terminated when a 20.3% reduction was demonstrated because it would be unethical to proceed with the trial if a mortality reduction of such magnitude was statistically demonstrated in the LDCT arm. The proven effectiveness of LDCT would support offering LDCT to the control arm and to the general population (25). Second, because LDCT screening has high sensitivity but low specificity, the positive predictive value of a positive study is very low (5.2%), whereas the negative predictive value (NPV) is very high (99.9%).
