This thesis will elaborate on the assessment of the development and treatment of coronary atherosclerosis.

Specifically, the aim of this thesis is to:
– Provide an overview of the various invasive imaging techniques that can be employed for the evaluation of coronary atherosclerosis and discuss the safety and methodological considerations of intracoronary OCT imaging.
– Evaluate micro- and macrovascular coronary dysfunction in swine with diabetes mellitus and coronary atherosclerosis development in swine with and without diabetes mellitus using experimental in-vivo and ex-vivo techniques.
– Describe the intracoronary assessment of various bioresorbable vascular scaffolds and assess the vascular response to the Absorb BVS in a clinical and experimental setting.
