This study describes the influence the General Practitioner, as person, has on occuring psychosocial problems and difficult patients in his practice. Chapter I explains, on basis of literature, how psychosocial problems are manifested in the G.P.'s practice as well as the way in which G.P.'s attend to these problems. Based on prevalence figures one can state that one out of every four patients has psychosocial problems. A large interdoctor-variation exists in perceiving these problems. Approximately 42% of the patients with psychosocial problems is recognized and appointed as such by the G .P. The treatment of these problems mainly consists of conversations, in which support and encouragement have a central function. It seems that a more systematic treatment-scheme improves the effectivity of the treatment.
