Cough is a frequent symptom in childhood. For daily practice, it is important to distinguish between non-specific cough (dry cough without other symptoms and without abnormal investigations) and specific cough (resulting from underlying illness). Non-specific cough requires a different approach than specific cough. We propose a systematic approach for the investigation and treatment of cough to prevent missing important diagnoses.
