The Centre for Rotterdam Cultural Sociology (CROCUS) at Erasmus University Rotterdam studies cultural change in contemporary Western societies, where relentless processes of individualization and globalization have done much to rob once firmly established and solidly founded communities, social identities and systems of meaning of their former plausibility. Precisely because of this, these processes have also sparked cultural quests for new meaning, identity and community, ranging from articulations of personal authenticity in post-Christian spirituality, to the formation of social networks on the Internet and the proliferation of neo-nationalist and populist political discourse.
