This chapter addresses changing consumption patterns. Starting with a brief presentation of classical sociological insights in the generation and manifestation of cultural consumption patterns, we will present the emergence of the cultural omnivore and the voracious consumer and how this inspired a re-thinking of the structuring and meaning of consumption. Subsequently, shifts in the mode of cultural production will be addressed. The consequences of such shifts will be illustrated in a discussion of digital services for music distribution.
