Introduction
The article ‘Measuring Economic Freedom; better without Size of Government’ by Jan Ott, researcher at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, was published in Social Indicators Research 135, nr. 2, 2018.
As a follow-up Jan Ott had a discussion with Fred McMahon, manager of the Economic Freedom of the World Project at the Fraser Institute, about the concept of economic freedom. The conceptualization is not a scientific issue, but precedes discussions about scientific issues like operationalization and measurement. Fred McMahon finds that economic freedom is just about the absence of inhibitions, while Jan Ott believes that the availability of options should be incorporated. They summarize their visions in their own contributions.
