On the basis of student registers of the Delft engineering school, the article discusses the social backgrounds of engineering students between 1842 and 1940 in the Netherlands. The relatively high social position of their parents throughout the period raises the question of the relation in status between engineering and the more classical learned professions as well as the officer corps.
