Healthcare budgets are limited and decisions have to be made regarding which treatments to reimburse, and which not. To facilitate this decision-making process, economic evaluations are increasingly used. Economic evaluation concerns the assessment of the costs and benefits of an intervention, relative to an appropriate comparator.

This thesis focused on the time trade off method (TTO), as its one of the preferred methods for obtaining quality of life weights. In a TTO exercise, a respondent is asked to trade off length of life against quality of life. This thesis further explored the influence of several respondent characteristics and attitudinal factors on TTO scores, with the aim to contribute to a better understanding of responses to TTO exercises
