A reframing of the new forms of contents production by general-interest public and private channels relies on new contributions brought by programming support in digital technology. For this study, we have developed a methodology for analyzing TV production of the main general interest channels in Brazil and Spain, in particular Rede Globo, SBT, Televisión Española and Antena 3. We have selected the most relevant models and trends that have been stemmed from the introduction of digital technology, highlighting their successes and failures in the entire television programming of both countries. The development of this methodology relies on a theoretical analysis and empirical observation of formats and changes produced by digital television in mainstream channels of Spain, providing direct comparison with data regarding the Brazilian networks’ programming, though they are based on a very limited number of existing studies on tendencies of contents in digital television in Brazil. Thus, although available studies on this are still limited, current data suggest that the programming of mainstream channels, not only in Spain, but also in Brazil, is focused on the specialization of the audience at all thematic levels, which include programs featured by a spectacular discourse relying on conditions where the most important is the competition for the great audience at national or state level.
