The case presents the complexity and challenges of realising the benefits of Smart Thermal Grids (STG) in the Hart van Zuid (Heart of the South Side) district of Rotterdam. Hart van Zuid is the pilot area of the RUGGEDISED project, where different Smart Thermal Grid solutions are being developed and implemented. These STG initiatives aim to demonstrate that energy from renewable sources (e.g., aquathermal energy) and back-up (aquifer thermal energy storage) can be shared between a range of buildings for heating and cooling purposes in the city. The case is part of the EU Horizon 2020 Smart City project RUGGEDISED, in which Rotterdam is one of the lighthouse cities. This project was set up to create urban spaces powered by secure, affordable and clean energy.
