A large portion of the plastic and reconstructive surgical procedures performed each year is aimed at repairing soft tissue defects, which result for example from traumatic injury or tumor resections. Large soft tissue defects, lead to a change in function and ‘normal’ body contour, which in its turn can lead to disability and emotional stress. Currently used methods to repair soft tissue defects include the use of autologous adipose tissue transplants and synthetic implants. Both procedures have their own advantages and drawbacks.
