This dissertation describes research on the effects of diabetes education through selfhelpgroups. The most important aim of diabetes education is to learn selfcare behavier to patients with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) to prevent complications on the short and the long term. Selfcare for DM patients is additional to the professional care and is concemed with leaming to cape with DM. The most importantaspectsof selfcare for DM pa ti ent.' are self-control and self-regulation. Self-control for patients with DM consistsof self-monitoring, physical excercise, checking their feet and body weight. Self-regulation consists of variatien of the faodintake and the doses of insuline, without interterenee of the professional.
