Employment and unemployment are issues of crucial importance, especially in the so-called 'Third World' countries where the magnitude of unemployment has reached impressive levels. In reply to this a large number of studies have recently appeared. Nevertheless, Marxist contributions have so far been relatively scarce, especially at a theoretical level. The aim of this paper is to develop, from a Marxist perspective, some basic theoretical remarks on the employment and unemployment issues in relation to peripheral social formations.
