Promoting Democracy in the Americas begins where Tom Farer’s formative book, Beyond Sovereignty : Collectively Defending Democracy in the Americas (Baltimore, MD: Johns Hopkins University Press), left off in 1996. Where the latter established the growing role of international organisations in democratisation, Promoting Democracy reveals how these organisations are now integral to understanding this process. Along with the Organization of American States (OAS), the United Nations, the United States and other major powers, non-governmental organisations and the spread of norms all play a part in shaping the very nature of democratic institutions.
