Iodine is an essential trace element being part of the thyroid hormones. Therefore an iodine deficiency or excess of iodine leads to disturbances in thyroid physiology, thyroid growth and thyroid hormone production. There are also strong indications that an iodine deficiency or an excess of iodine has effects on the thyroid autoimmune reactivity.
