The studies described in this thesis aim to answer the following questions: does selective decontamination cause 17 1. a reduction of the number of respiratory tract infections in patients after oesophageal resection? 2. a reduction or disappearance of potentially pathogenic microorganisms? 3. a reduction of mortality? 4. increased resistance to antibiotics? 5. any adverse effects when discontinuated?
