This chapter outlines basic mechanisms of heating tissue and describes representative hyperthermia (HT) technology with typical performance capabilities. Temperature measurement approaches are reviewed with an eye toward control of power deposition. Treatment planning is described with examples of how electromagnetic and thermal simulations can improve treatment setup and real-time control. Clinical trial results of HT combined with radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy are summarized and references given to important previous work. While issues remain in regulatory approval, reimbursement, and distribution of state-of-the-art heating systems, we anticipate the proven efficacy will combine with recent technology advances to expand the use of HT for cancer therapy.
