In this manuscript we postulate as to what may have caused the rising incidence of atopic disorders. Atopic disorders are compared to other prevalent diseases with an evolutionary advantage such as sickle cell anemia and hemochromatosis. A defective skin barrier has immunological advantages in the survival from infectious diseases. Selection pressure of filaggrine mutants from tuberculosis and influenza could explain the rise of atopic disorders. We also discuss a few epiphenomena seen in the atopic immune system.
