TURP is the gold standard as surgical treatment for LUTS as a result of BPH. However, this treatment may be associated with a significant morbidity, must take place under regional or general anesthesia and is contraindicated in patients with a vital anticoagulant indication. Since a few years, embolisation of the prostatic artery (PAE) is used as an elective treatment for LUTS. Long-term results show effectiveness in 72 % of the patients. The most prevalent complication is a urinary tract infection, which only occurs in less than 5 % of the patients. Compared to TURP, PAE is less effective on short term and is accompanied with more complications. However, in selected cases patients could benefit from this evolving technique.
