SOX2 is a versatile transcription factor that is expressed and is necessary at many specific stages and areas of vertebrate development. SOX2 therefore encounters different cell environments with different factors available as potential cofactors in transcriptional regulation. Here, I will review the different interaction partners that have been reported for SOX2 in different cell types and discuss how they enable SOX2 to change its target genes and mode of transcriptional activation.
