Since 2013 fourteen cases of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) have been reported during treatment with fumarates. In most cases a causal relation is plausible. In this article the published cases and the cases reported to national pharmacovigilance centers and the World Health Organization (WHO) collaborating center for international drug monitoring UMC (Uppsala Monitoring Centre in Sweden), are described. PML is a serious disease and therefore care should be taken when treating patients with fumarates. Patients should be informed about this possible adverse event.
