The prostate is located between the bladder and the penis (Figure 1). The prostate is just in front of the rectum. The urethra runs through the center of the prostate, from the bladder to the penis, letting urine flow out of the body.

| The studies reported in this thesis were performed at the departments of Urology of the Erasmus MC, University Medical Center, Rotterdam, the Netherlands as an integrated part of the European Randomized Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer (ERSPC).
