Abstract

This thesis deals with the immune inflammatory aspects of obesity, the metabolic syndrome (MetS), insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes (T2D) in the Andean region, more precisely in Quito, Ecuador.

To understand the research questions a short introduction in the immune system is presented first; followed by a brief description of the pathophysiological and immune aspects of obesity, insulin resistance, the MetS and T2D.
