This thesis describes the relation between early life nutrition and disease in childhood. Within the Generation R Study, a population-based prospective cohort study in the Netherlands, different nutritional exposures during the critical stages in infancy and early childhood were assessed in relation to childhood health outcomes. Nutrition in early life, including breastfeeding, the introduction of complementary feeding and dietary patterns were assessed in relation to allergic, respiratory and gastrointestinal health. The period of nutritional transition in infancy and diet in early childhood may influence childhood health and provide a window of opportunity for disease prevention.
